Project Overview
Completed over a seven-month period, the project involved the construction of a new 7-Eleven service station, including complex dewatering works and the installation of underground fuel storage tanks, dispensers, and hazardous area electrical systems.
The project was led by Retail Projects Director, Alex Plowman, with a strong focus on engineering precision, environmental management, and safe delivery in challenging ground conditions.

Project Scope
Nqpetro delivered the full scope of works on the fuels system for this greenfield service station build, from excavation through to final commissioning.
Key project elements included:
- Engineered sheet piling and dewatering systems to enable safe excavation in a high groundwater environment
- Treatment, testing, and monitoring of groundwater prior to discharge
- Installation of 2 × 90,000L underground fuel storage tanks
- Installation of underground fuel lines and hazardous area electrical systems
- Installation of 4 × 10-hose dispensers, delivering five grades of fuel
- Pre and post-bury integrity testing of the fuel system
- NMI calibrations
- Installation and configuration of an automatic tank gauging (ATG) system
- Full commissioning of the fuel system for retail operation

Project Challenges
Ground conditions at the Smithfield site presented significant challenges due to its proximity to the ocean and surrounding natural wetlands, resulting in elevated groundwater levels.
To safely install the underground fuel tanks, Nqpetro implemented a controlled dewatering solution, supported by an engineered sheet piling system to stabilise excavations. Continuous dewatering was required over several weeks to maintain safe working conditions and enable the installation of the underground fuel tank system.
All extracted groundwater was treated, tested, and monitored prior to discharge, ensuring environmental compliance while allowing construction activities to progress without interruption.
Project Outcome

Despite challenging conditions, the Smithfield Service Station was successfully completed within the planned timeframe and fully commissioned for operation.
