Wellcamp Airport SAF Upgrade

Project Overiew

The Wellcamp Airport SAF Upgrade involved upgrading the existing Jet A1 facility to incorporate SAF blending, storage, and dispensing capability. This positions Wellcamp Airport as one of Australia’s early adopters of SAF infrastructure and a leader in renewable aviation fuel innovation.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is one of the most practical pathways to decarbonising aviation. Derived from renewable feedstocks, SAF can be blended with conventional Jet A1 and used directly in existing aircraft without modifications.

Meeting strict international standards such as ASTM D7566 and ASTM D1655, SAF is recognised globally as a certified “drop-in” fuel.

With net-zero targets driving aviation’s transition, regional airports are emerging as hubs for SAF adoption — and this project positions Wellcamp Airport at the forefront of that movement

Project Challenges

The project required close collaboration to overcome several key challenges:

• Integration of SAF blending and F34 dosing with the existing Jet A1 facility

• Compliance with ASTM D7566, ASTM D1655, EI1530, and EI1533 standards

• Site layout restrictions and heavy vehicle (road train) access

• Environmental considerations and design limitations

• Automation requirements, alarms, and interlocks to ensure safe concurrent fuel operations

• Tie-ins to the existing facility within limited shutdown windows
